About this artwork

She paints the bodies moving but also depicts the souls of people going about their business, thinking of their lives, their wishes , their aims. The artist is fascinated by the way people behave unconsciously. They are caught in an instant of their life. There is no before and no after. Somehow frozen forever.

Luciana Mathioudakis is an Italian-Greek artist currently based in Brussels. She is an experienced artist who has spent more than two decades studying painting in various studios and workshops. While for the majority of her career Mathioudakis worked exclusively with oil and pastel paints, she recently switched to beeswax applied to panel, a system that dates back to ancient Greece. Her work explores how people orient themselves in various spaces, especially within crowds, as well as the broader theme of movement as a form of dialogue between people.
