About this artwork
Encaustic. The subject is the crowd walking from a shopping street to the entry of the underground station passing by a seller of street food. She investigates the intimate relation between perfect strangers in the same space.
My work does not require framing as it measures 3 cm deep at each side. The canvas (cotton) is glued to a wooden support with casein glue, which makes it rigid and strong. Glue made with casein is an ancient technique as is… encaustic (beeswax technique) which is strong and resistant as Fayum portraits of 1st century a.D. are an example .

Luciana Mathioudakis is an Italian-Greek artist currently based in Brussels. She is an experienced artist who has spent more than two decades studying painting in various studios and workshops. While for the majority of her career Mathioudakis worked exclusively with oil and pastel paints, she recently switched to beeswax applied to panel, a system that dates back to ancient Greece. Her work explores how people orient themselves in various spaces, especially within crowds, as well as the broader theme of movement as a form of dialogue between people.
