About this artwork
We created Before the Wind from two real dandelion seedheads at the exact moment before their release—when everything appears still, yet movement feels inevitable.
Using ultra-high-resolution scannography process, we captured every filament, shadow, and microscopic structure directly from the living botanical specimens, preserving details normally invisible to the naked eye.
What draws us to dandelions is their quiet contradiction: they appear… fragile, almost weightless, yet they carry extraordinary resilience and purpose. In this work, we wanted to explore that suspended moment between holding on and letting go.
Produced as a continuous-tone photographic artwork beneath museum-grade acrylic, Before the Wind is designed to reveal itself in two ways—an architectural presence from across the room, and an intimate world of detail as you move closer.
Botanica Lumen is the collaborative studio of Anna Surdacka and Luis Fernandez, bringing together botanical artistry, optical imaging, and material precision. Anna’s instinct for living form and natural composition meets Luis’s background in optics, physics, and ultra-high-resolution imaging, shaped through years developing industrial scanning systems.
Together, they created an original scannographic practice that captures real botanical specimens with extraordinary clarity, tonal depth, and presence. Working against deep black fields, their pieces move beyond vintage botanical illustration, traditional photography, or decorative printmaking, revealing nature as something immersive, architectural, and unexpectedly powerful.
Designed to be admired from afar and discovered up close, each Botanica Lumen work is created as a museum-grade photographic object, built to live with presence for generations.
