About this artwork
This piece was inspired by reading about Isadora Duncan. While immersed in her life, I was reminded of Sandro Botticelli’s La Primavera (Spring), a painting that deeply influenced her. As I read, I imagined myself both inside and beyond the painting, entering a dream-like state in which I became Duncan. This work emerged from that imaginative experience.
At its core, the painting reflects on the nature of human desire. I see the essence of humanity… not as a thinking subject (cogito), but as a desiring one (desidero). Desire is restless—it moves, flows, and crosses boundaries, forming and dissolving territories. In this sense, it is nomadic, always shifting and never fixed.
Through this work, I engage with the paradoxical lightness and intensity of desire, holding a tension between movement and stillness. I hope it offers a quiet sense of resilience and openness, allowing viewers to encounter their own shifting perceptions within the work.
Lydia Lee is a painter with roots in both rigorous realist training and academic study in Western painting at Seoul. Her technique fuses dynamic, layered gestures inspired by Abstract Expressionism and Impressionism, blending Eastern ink painting’s spirit with the depth of Western oils to create harmonious, rhythmic compositions. She orchestrates each canvas with a focus on movement and balance, channeling light and musicality. Lee’s paintings radiate a profound, vital energy, inviting viewers to sense the invisible harmonies and beauty that animate both the natural world and human existence.
