About this artwork
Korundi is a semi-precious stone that I found in Lapland. It is a byproduct mineral for gold miners. I painted its deep red color as a counterpoint on to the soft moss. Only two elements directly from nature. For on your wall as you wish.

Maija Vanhatapio (b. 1946) was born in Helsinki and currently lives and works in Kajaani, Eastern Finland. She holds a degree in graphic design from School of Industrial Arts and has studied fine arts at the University of Lapland. Vanhatapio is a member of the Oulu Region Professional Art Association and has exhibited her work extensively in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including in online galleries.
Her artistic practice is deeply inspired by the dynamic forces of nature, especially the shifting moods and forms of the Nordic landscape. Vanhatapio’s work often explores the tension between abstraction and observation, using mixed media and acrylics to distill visual experiences into elemental forms. Her compositions invite viewers to pause and reflect, offering a quiet yet powerful dialogue between memory, emotion, and environment.
