About this artwork
This piece is inspired, as much of my work is, by the landscapes of Ireland. An everchanging palette of greens and blues to work from. These landscapes are increasingly fragile, and I am moved to celebrate them at a time when they are under threat.
It is set on the river Quoile as it flows into Strangford Lough in Co. Down, Northern Ireland. This part of the river Quoile is a small nature reserve called the “Pondage” near the Town of Downpatrick,… frequently at threat from flooding. The reserve protects local waterfowl and provides a wooded trail full of the quiet rustle of leaves. Occasional breaks in the trees allow you to see across the broad expanse of the river and to feel the gentle breeze that ripples across the surface of the water. This painting allows you to stand with me on the riverbank on that rare light filled day hoping for the ducks to arrive.
Maire Gaffney is an Irish artist who works mainly in acrylic and oils. She employs a realist, traditional approach, using layering techniques to evoke depth and perspective in her paintings of Irish and European landscapes. Her work celebrates vibrant colour and shifting light, inviting viewers to take time in our increasingly pressured lives to stop and reconnect with the serenity and everyday magic to be found in nature’s most fleeting moments.
