I created this piece thinking of the children in my country — those who fall asleep to sirens instead of lullabies. My own kids are teenagers now, but I still see the small child inside them, holding onto safety in a world that feels anything but safe.
This is a portrait of stolen childhoods and the quiet strength it takes to rest when the world is breaking. The tanks in the blanket are not toys — they are the weight every child here learns to carry… too early.
It’s a tribute. It’s a wound. It’s a dream that refuses to die.
Maksym Stasiuk is a Ukrainian painter, illustrator, and printmaker born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. For over 20 years, he illustrated hundreds of children’s books, working in both digital and traditional techniques. Recently, he returned to his first passion — painting. Maksym works with watercolour, acrylic, and graphic techniques, exploring themes of memory, transformation, and emotional depth. Since relocating near Lviv with his wife and two children, he has focused on developing his own artistic voice. Art is a shared path in the Stasiuk family: his wife and daughter are also artists, and their life together is built around creativity and meaning.
