About this artwork
The title Ember (glowing coal/deep-burning embers) perfectly encapsulates this work. A tactile, intense presence of hidden energy and warmth pervades the composition. The relief-like surface gains an almost organic depth through the application of multiple layers of paint.
The color palette extends far beyond a simple red: a deep foundation of various red tones meets subtle aubergine, indigo, and Payne's Grey accents at the edges, softening contours… and creating a three-dimensional spatial effect. Like fire smoldering beneath a layer of ash, the light breaks through the structures, drawing the viewer into a meditative vortex and developing a powerful presence in the space that commands attention.
