About this artwork
Bullies are everywhere and bullying always seems to be driven by inadequacies. Put a bully in an environment where there is no one to exact their torment upon and they shrink into the background.
The large red head, to me, represents a monument of change. An awareness of past wrong doings, an aggregate of unstable aggression all rolled into one, frozen and unable to influence or control what is being played out in front of it.
So who is the bully… and who is the victim here?
They are all the victim—just at different moments.
And perhaps more uncomfortably:
They are also all, at some point, the bully.
That ambiguity is where the painting really lives. It stops being about blame and becomes about inheritance—how harm travels, mutates, and embeds itself over time.
« Our world is tearing itself apart environmentally, socially, and economically. It is my job to highlight the faults as I see them. I disguise dark themes with color and rhythmical lines. »
Marc Rayner is an Australian artist based in Sweden who has exhibited his works nationally, as well as in Sweden, Monaco, France, Qatar, Italy, India, South Korea, Denmark, and Japan. The key to his artworks is the creation of 'quasi-landscapes' rich in text and design, or flat and almost devoid of information. This 'distorted zone' is a place where Rayner's tormented, disenfranchised, and often unfortunate characters exist. He is drawn to outsider artistic styles and naive art in broader terms.
