About this artwork
In The future looks crowded I attempted to build a world where noise, information, bodies and objects are compressed into a single unstable space. The figures appear stacked together, almost unable to breathe, surrounded by symbols, fragments of architecture, mechanical forms and watchful eyes. I wanted the painting to feel psychologically overcrowded as much as physically crowded. The repeated eyes reference surveillance, exposure and the gradual…
erosion of privacy in contemporary life. Consumer culture also runs through the work, where identity becomes tangled with products, systems and constant stimulation. Beneath the humour and colour there is an unease about where humanity may be heading next.

Marc Rayner is an Australian artist based in Sweden who has exhibited his works nationally, as well as in Sweden, Monaco, France, Qatar, Italy, India, South Korea, Denmark, and Japan. The key to his artworks is the creation of 'quasi-landscapes' rich in text and design, or flat and almost devoid of information. This 'distorted zone' is a place where Rayner's tormented, disenfranchised, and often unfortunate characters exist. He is drawn to outsider artistic styles and naive art in broader terms.
