About this artwork

This piece is my view of the prison world the title "Lifer" refers to someone who will spend all or most of their life in prison. I find a close relationship between street art and crime. In some countries graffiti is seen as a criminal offence and yet there is no denying the beauty of it. Graffiti says, "we were here, we existed, we lived, we tore it down and left some of it behind for you to see, then we layered more on top of all of that so you… know we continue to exist". Criminals live in this world, they move on these streets and often tag their area with a symbol, their tag or a complete complex work of art. For me though the real graffiti exists in the layering, the patina that is formed over years of use, miss use and degradation. These same descriptions can often be applied to a criminal.

Marc Rayner is an Australian artist based in Sweden who has exhibited his works nationally, as well as in Sweden, Monaco, France, Qatar, Italy, India, South Korea, Denmark, and Japan. The key to his artworks is the creation of 'quasi-landscapes' rich in text and design, or flat and almost devoid of information. This 'distorted zone' is a place where Rayner's tormented, disenfranchised, and often unfortunate characters exist. He is drawn to outsider artistic styles and naive art in broader terms.
