About this artwork
In "The Intoxication," I'm interested in the moment when the body seems to slip away from itself. The head is thrown back, the gaze lost inward—somewhere between rapture, loss of control, and an almost ecstatic absorption in one's own sensations. The large black form into which the body partially disappears is, for me, simultaneously hair, shadow, and a space that encompasses and supports the figure.
Technically, I work with acrylic on paper in… multiple layers: glazed backgrounds with quick, slanted brushstrokes meet more impasto, angular strokes on the face and shoulders. Scratch marks, overpainting, and dry brushstrokes make the body shimmer out of the darkness. In this way, the intoxication itself becomes a painterly movement – between dissolution and condensation, between figure and abstract field.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolored works that have received numerous international awards.
