About this artwork
This image is part of the series "When Stones Speak." Off the island of Rügen, near Cape Arkona, the remains of a water gauge tower stand in the water: a heavy base made of boulders, above which are fragmented brick shells with empty window openings. I choose a low perspective along the surf; the rocky edge on the left leads into the picture, waves lap at the base of the ruin, the horizon forms a sober measuring line. I'm interested in the contradiction:…
a structure for measuring is shaped by what is measured. Salt, algae, eruptions, and rusty iron stumps leave traces in the masonry—a record of time and weather.
The scene is reminiscent of Romanticism, yet its technical character and significance remain distinctly contemporary. For me, the work simultaneously reads as a warning sign of sea level rise caused by climate change: the instrument of control disintegrates, while the sea continues its own incessant writing—an image between steadfastness and dissolution.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery.
