About this artwork
In "Calcite" from my series "When Stones Speak," I'm interested in the moment when a mineral loses its objectivity and appears almost alive. Under magnification, the crystals become folded scales, layers like plumage, a rock face, or a frozen wave. I work in such a way that all orientation is softened—up, down, inside, outside begin to slip. The stone suddenly reveals a movement that was always inherent in its structure.
For me, this image becomes… a silent voice of the material: it speaks of pressure, time, and growth without needing narrative means. I want to make this energy visible and at the same time open a space where natural form and abstract vision meet.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance.
