About this artwork
I'm showing an image that oscillates between grace and unease. "Leakage" belongs to the "Planetary Boundaries" series and represents the planetary boundary of "pollution" (in this case, of water). Streaky traces run across the damp surface, as if an oily liquid were seeping out; the bright reflection is alluring, yet the underlying tone is toxic. To the right, a pipe appears to be sweating fine, pearly fluid—an almost tender detail that only serves…
to highlight the disturbance.
I'm interested in how the aesthetics of material and structure, on the one hand, and the danger, on the other, intertwine. I don't offer a definitive diagnosis, but rather an open-ended situation: a seemingly harmless exit that raises the question of what's lurking beneath the surface – and how we should deal with it.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolored works that have received numerous international awards.
