About this artwork
At first glance, the depiction appears distinctive, even fresh: in hardly any other work do I use so much fresh and naturalistic coloring: green heralds vibrant life, and the arched arrangement is reminiscent of a summer tree-lined avenue – form and structure dominate the composition.
And yet, this seemingly carefree appearance also has something threatening and dark about it: Does such an alleyway truly invite you to enter? One is drawn into an… indefinable distance of dense biomass. It's unclear what lies at the end of this path—perhaps a dead end? And not without reason: corn monocultures and the much-lamented "cornification" of entire landscapes—also promoted by the use of corn for agricultural energy (keywords: biogas and agrofuels)—are a major problem for biodiversity in agricultural landscapes and are characterized by heavy pesticide use.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences.
