About this artwork
In Tatort V, I focus my gaze on a corner that is often overlooked in everyday life: bricks, a harsh shadow, a curved mark in the floor – like a line that divides the space and simultaneously draws it into the depths. The narrow frame leaves no escape, no before and after; a horizon line does not exist. Instead, the scene becomes a stage of edges, joints, and surfaces in which the eye becomes trapped.
The coarse-grained texture and the greenish-blue… tint to the monochrome palette cool the materials; the contrast juxtaposes light and dark. There are no people, no clear clues. It is precisely this absence that unsettles the neutrality: the trace could be harmless—or a remnant hinting at something. Nothing happens in the image, yet the mind begins to investigate. The crime scene only comes into being in the viewer's mind.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language. In his work, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published several art books (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented in international academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, and Minneapolis).
