About this artwork
I show the front of a simple tiled house. The grainy texture, the monochromatic, blue-greenish tones, and the harsh contrasts make the scene appear unsettling, but also socially confined. The attempt to create a uniform domesticity (lace curtains, floral decorations) is thwarted by the stark, cramped surroundings. Nothing "happens" in the picture; all events take place in the viewer's mind: through alienation and association, simple locations become…
potential crime scenes. The title alone is enough to transform harmless scenes into mentally charged, threatening spaces. But the work can also be read the other way around: especially in close social environments, violence and delinquency often play out behind inconspicuous facades. How can we be sure that we don't become victims of our hasty attributions (and declare harmless places to be crime scenes) – while simultaneously overlooking those crime scenes that are concealed precisely in the guise of the ordinary?

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language.
