About this artwork
In Drift Field, I explore how a strict visual order gradually dissolves under the influence of light. A regular grid, initially defined by clear linear repetition, becomes softer and more unstable due to changing illumination. What at first glance appears precise and fixed reveals itself to be dependent on perception, perspective, and moment.
I deliberately reduce the image to lines, light, and surface. This very reduction makes subtle shifts visible:… edges blur, contrasts dissolve, and the uniformity of the grid begins to drift. The transformation doesn't arise from post-processing, but from the photograph itself—from the interplay of material and light.
I am interested in this fragile point where order doesn't disappear, but becomes uncertain. The image invites slow contemplation and shows that visual certainty is never stable, but constantly re-emerges.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences.
