About this artwork
In this work, I am interested in the moment when a river becomes a construction. The water is contained, tamed, guided along smooth walls – and yet it remains in motion, unpredictable in its eddies and foamy edges. The urban canal, the Pleißemühlgraben in Leipzig, appears like a technical cross-section of the landscape: straight lines, joints, levels, a space designed for flow.
The old waterwheel adds a distinctive touch, a reminder of earlier mills… on the site. With its serial blades and circular forms, it stands between past and present: a relic of its former use, making the water's energy visible without making a sound itself. I am fascinated by this interplay between its rigid frame and vibrant surface – how the city structures the water, and yet how the water retains its own unique voice.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolored works that have received numerous international awards.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his work, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published several art books (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented in international academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, and Minneapolis).
