About this artwork
The fictitious name refers to the sorceress Circe of the Odyssey evoked by the Mediterranean places and the model's appearance. Interpreting a face is a bit like a palmist reading a hand to reveal a personality. Here I was intrigued by the knowledge of the model's sensitivity, which oscillates between crystalline rationality and the fickleness of a flame. The portrait has its own complexity due to the variety of subjects, the model, the still lifes,…
the seascape and the patrons of the place. The objects are a sort of rebus of the model's character. In applying the acrylic color on canvas, I proceeded to lay out homogeneous background areas depending on the context (human figure, building, sky and sea, close-ups) and then define the particulars in detail. The most challenging part was reproducing a consistent brightness between the various parts of the composition in an afternoon hour preceding sunset, when the artificial lights are about to be turned on.
