About this artwork
The first possible interpretation of the image is the suggestive vision of an island in the Venetian lagoon. However, the framework also focuses attention on the vulnerabilities of the territories amplified by rapidly evolving climate changes.
Venice and the Venetian lagoon are in fact the symbol of the fragility of the Italian territory, rich in history, artistic and environmental treasures but at the same time exposed to the risk of flooding due… to the rise in sea levels. The image shows the contrasts of light that the sun produces with the clouds, giving the landscape a both spectacular and dramatic atmosphere. The rendering of the water and foam is virtuosic: the technique recalls impressionism and also uses the spatula for the dense application of the color which takes on material qualities. The thin strip of land with the houses and vegetation of a smaller island emerges in the center of the canvas, suspended between the waters of the lagoon and the sky.
