About this artwork
Stubborn Hope holds the question every artist who has kept going past the point of easy justification eventually faces: is it resilience or stubbornness? And does the distinction matter?
The cobalt blue arrived early in this painting, laid in dense downward strokes as a foundation rather than a final statement, other marks built over and around it afterward. Orange and red-orange move through the upper field in fast directional strokes. Pink and… lavender hold the left more atmospherically. The yellow field on the right sits separate and considered. The pale green ground surfaces through the lower field, an earlier state visible beneath everything that followed.
The painting does not resolve the question. It simply keeps going, which may be the only answer that matters.
