"Hélène" is an illustration created with colored pencils (Faber-Castell Polychromos) on 200gsm A4 paper (21 x 29.7 cm), inspired by a portrait photograph of my aunt Hélène taken in 2025 during her last trip to India. This drawing is a tribute to my aunt, who passed away in March 2026 after a painful battle with cancer. Born in Normandy, she spent most of her life living abroad, notably in New Caledonia and Cambodia.
With the warm and comforting… shades of orange and crimson on her face, I sought to represent the warmth and strength of a moment of inner peace, despite the illness that was already spreading at that moment. A fragile balance between the power of life and its vulnerability.
Marie Casaÿs, with a background in drawing and graphic design, is an accomplished artist who has specialized in colored pencil drawing on paper since 2018. Through meticulous gradient work and intense colors, inspired by photographic projects, she creates a modern, figurative and poetic graphic dynamic. The main themes of her works, namely the body, nudity and eroticism, are imbued with a warmth, elegance, and sensoriality that invite a deep and moving exploration of identity and love.
