About this artwork
Often beauty is found in flowers when they start to go over. In the case of this rose bloom it had been rained on over several day speeding up the decay process. The water had leached the colours from the petals and made them crinkle and crumble. With care I cut the flower from the stem and brought it into my studio to photograph, capturing the intricate details and colours. For me photography is a process that can open a window into another world. I specialise in macro photography of botanical subjects. However I do not make scientifically correct images. I use fresh material from my garden and freeze the subjects in deionised water using Petri dishes or large ice cube trays. In a sense this process is a literal freezing of time, analogous to photography itself. Rather than producing ‘tack sharp’ images I use ice to create visual barriers, through bubbles, cracks and distortions to create a sense of other-worldly mystery. The viewer has to work harder to ‘read’ familiar plant forms making the act of seeing more conscious and deliberate. I am now starting to explore mixing deionised water with tap water in different proportions, and how this affects what is revealed and concealed.
