About this artwork
Guardian of Tradition celebrates one of Zeeland's most cherished traditions: ring riding. Inspired by the annual competitions held in my hometown of Zoutelande, this painting captures a quiet moment before the action—the rider viewed from behind, focused on the challenge ahead beneath an expansive Dutch sky.
Rather than portraying the event itself, I wanted to convey its atmosphere: the anticipation, discipline, and enduring connection between rider,… horse, and tradition. The composition invites the viewer to stand behind the rider, sharing the same view and the same moment of reflection before the ride begins.
Painted with expressive yet carefully controlled brushwork, the work balances realism with painterly texture. The warm earth tones of the horse contrast with the luminous blues and soft pinks of the evening sky, while the striking red sash becomes a visual anchor that symbolizes pride and heritage.
