About this artwork
My collage, titled MISSING SPACE, addresses the issue of the lack of affordable housing in Germany. The housing market is tight, and too few social housing units are being built. To visually represent this dramatic lack of space, I chose the technique of exaggeration. The image depicts a cluster of high-rise buildings in the Brutalist style—a concrete wasteland with many floors and apartments with windows that are too small. My protagonist is practically…
squeezing herself through the building in all directions, trying to escape the confinement and reach the outside. Her gaze is directed towards the sky, conveying the desire for more space in her own home. Two other figures are also shown, seeking to escape the cramped conditions. The base of the building is formed by a picturesque village with a large oak tree from which a girl swings carefree over the river. This depiction stands in stark contrast to the seemingly inescapable problem of the housing shortage.
