The Mirror Image of the Church" explores the symbolism of the cross as an expression of institutional disunity.
Protection and hope give way to betrayal and cover-up of sexual violence.
The color black was deliberately chosen to illustrate the path of the Church—a path that leads from light into darkness, characterized by the inadequate education of sexual violence against children within the Church institution. This darkness is revealed in the… shattered mirror fragments, which symbolize the distorted image the Church leaves behind through its actions and failures.
The work is a memorial to those affected, an appeal to take responsibility and an urgent warning for clarification.
It calls for the shadows of the past to be illuminated and for consistent action to be taken to ensure that the crimes are dealt with fairly.
Melanie Meyer, a self-taught artist, dedicates her work to the intensive exploration of human experience. Her sculptures and paintings express an emotional journey and focus particularly on the issue of sexual violence against children. Her art gives a voice to those affected worldwide, breaks taboos, demands justice, and serves as a testament to suffering and resilience. Driven by the search for humanity and the exploration of human existence, she creates multifaceted art that touches and inspires reflection. She sees her works as powerful instruments to bring light into an often dark world and to remind us of the inalienable nature of our humanity. She is currently seeking sponsors who share her vision to further develop her exhibition "Because what must not be cannot be," a memorial dedicated to the victims of sexual violence.
