About this artwork
A new painting by the artist of Canal Street, which is the central street of Manchester's 'Gay Village' which is full of bars, nightclubs, and restaurants and which featured frequently in the groundbreaking 1990's TV series 'Queer As Folk' which was filmed in Manchester. It is entitled No. 4 because it is the fourth painting the artist has made of this same scene, the previous three having now been sold. It's painted in the artist's distinctive style… with a bold use of colour, distortion, and in this instance, a playfully naive potrayal of the characters within the scene, full of narrative allusions and detail. It is painted in acrylics and occasionally inks on compressed wooden fibreboard and was completed in December 2022.
« I am more interested in capturing emotion than representation. When I paint my landscapes, I become a sort of nympholeptic camera. »
Michael Gutteridge is a British painter whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout the United Kingdom. His cityscapes combine diverse influences and involve spontaneous forms of distortion expressed via color, proportion, perspective, and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Often, Gutteridge endeavors to convey existentially disorientating feelings as well as other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. He creates using acrylics and ink on wood.
