About this artwork
A painting of an traditional Victorian pub named the Crown Inn which is nestled in an old, rapidly changing industrial landscape in Northern England, under a large railway viaduct which rattles as trains pass by overhead. Generally, it's a nocturnal scene of a quintessential English pub but painted with a rich use of colour in a distortive, expressionist style in which joyous and celebratory feelings inspired by the view are expressed. The artist… was interested in how the building exists in this landscape quite far from any actual human dwellings.
The artwork is painted on 40x50cm primed hardboard using acrylic paints, some liquid acrylic inks, and was developed in several layers over time. It is mounted in a green wooden frame specifically chosen and painted by the artist in order to accentuate the colours within the work and in that respect the frame can be considered as part of the art work as a complete item ready to hang.
« I am more interested in capturing emotion than representation. When I paint my landscapes, I become a sort of nympholeptic camera. »
Michael Gutteridge is a British painter whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout the United Kingdom. His cityscapes combine diverse influences and involve spontaneous forms of distortion expressed via color, proportion, perspective, and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Often, Gutteridge endeavors to convey existentially disorientating feelings as well as other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. He creates using acrylics and ink on wood.
