About this artwork

An emotionally vibrant, expressionist version of the spectacular Victorian, Neo-Gothic, Manchester Town Hall which was designed by the English architect Alfred Waterhouse in 1877, yet fused also with a fantastical element with many subtle and cryptic details included. The artist began this painting in 2011 and reworked it many times and it was only completed to his satisfaction in April 2018. The trees in the painting involved experimenting with… new techniques to produce a stimulating capillary effect. This painting is called no. 3 because it is the third version the artist has painted of this same scene, all of the others being now sold and in private collections.

The artwork is painted is on 502mmx703mm, primed hardboard using acrylic paints, some liquid acrylic inks, and was developed in several layers over time, often using experimental techniques.

Michael Gutteridge is a British painter whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout the United Kingdom. His cityscapes combine diverse influences and involve spontaneous forms of distortion expressed via color, proportion, perspective, and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Often, Gutteridge endeavors to convey existentially disorientating feelings as well as other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. He creates using acrylics and ink on wood.
