About this artwork
The artwork "Burnout" powerfully conveys the theme of emotional exhaustion and inner struggle. The central "heart shape," composed of bold color structures, suggests vitality and fundamental life forces, which are, however, strongly contrasted by the title and the accompanying text.
The title "Burnout" addresses the waning of this vitality. The use of purple and black brings sadness and the darker aspects of human emotions to the forefront. The… word "To Do" runs along the right edge of the image, becoming increasingly torn and faded. This development illustrates a vicious cycle of exhaustion, in which tasks and pressure become a burden. The ever-fading lettering suggests the feeling of being burned out, even to the point of potential cardiac arrest—not only in a physical but also in an emotional sense.
Michael Lerche uses acrylic paint, ink, varnishes, metal wire, wood, and various other materials, drawing on his experience as an industrial and furniture designer. His works are characterized by a reduced palette, serene clarity, and intriguing surface textures, in which he innovatively combines painting, sculpture, and graphic art. He masterfully portrays themes such as transience and nature's resilience, creating an inspiring and contemplative atmosphere that encourages reflection and instills confidence.
