About this artwork
In 2022, I received a Via Regia scholarship and was able to work as an artist in residence in Görlitz for four weeks. There, I learned a great deal about the people of East Germany and the sell-off of East German companies after reunification. While searching for inspiration, I encountered many fascinating subjects during my walks through Görlitz, including an old, dilapidated yeast factory. I interpreted the architecture, the colors of the brown…
wall tiles, the mosses, lichens, and peeling paint in my own way and translated them into this work, "System Change."
The conditions on site did not allow for working on a stretched canvas. So I decided to work on the canvas directly on the floor using a spatula and trowel.
This allowed me to capture the morbid charm of these lost places very well.
