About this artwork

This is No. 4 in a series of Maine lobsterman painted on an orange acrylic background (the figure is done in oil). I typically start my paintings with an orange underpainting (usually not this bright!) and often post progress shots. I generally paint the figure first and then place it in whatever scene that I am painting. A number of people told me that they really liked the orange background and asked that I leave it. I can see what they mean.… Although the background color is so bright, it really makes the figure pop out of the painting. In reality, this lobsterman has just moored his lobster boat and is tightening up the lines securing it to the wharf.
