About this artwork
I painted this quiet passageway as an invitation to pause and wander. I’m drawn to the way the worn stone steps lead the eye upward, pulling you through the cool shadow at the base and into the soft, open light beyond. The arch overhead feels like a natural doorway, heavy with deep greens and bright blue blooms that spill in from both sides, framing the scene like a living curtain. Along the walls, I built the masonry with thick, textured strokes… so you can almost feel the uneven blocks and weathered mortar. I let the windows and shutters pop in bold blues, small notes of color that echo the flowers and keep the palette airy. Touches of pink drift across the ledges and planters, warming the grays and hinting at a gentle, sunlit afternoon. In the distance, the pale belltower rises calmly against the sky, a quiet landmark that gives the climb a destination and a sense of peace.
Mike Haubenstock is a passionate painter with over 20 years of experience, enriched by guidance from art teachers and coaches. He works primarily in oils, embracing a modern impressionist style with representational forms, loose brushwork, and high-key colors, often using a palette knife for textural depth. His evocative still lifes, florals, landscapes, and unique reflection series merge everyday beauty with intriguing urban overlays. Through his art, he radiates the joy of discovery and the deep satisfaction of creative problem-solving, inviting viewers to slow down, connect, and savor the subtle poetry of ordinary moments.
