This spontaneous sketch captures the fragile moment of a young woman absorbed in her thoughts.
The quick lines of the ballpoint pen reveal an expression that is both melancholic and determined, while the colorful touches of the clothing contrast with the economy of the line and reinforce the presence of the character.
In this intuitive and unrevised work, I wanted the gesture to remain visible, almost raw, revealing the search for immediate emotion.… The curlers here become an everyday element transformed into a poetic and intimate symbol, somewhere between popular femininity and contemporary introspection.
This sketch was made around the same time as my paintings "The Girl with Curlers" and "Cynthia," which depict young women lost in thought and smoking. They have enormous limbs in the style of Schiele.
