About this artwork
The central figure is a fishmonger. His grey hair and full mustache point to his long experience. He is dressed in a sturdy jacket, but what sets him apart is the surprising formality of a visible necktie beneath it. This juxtaposition of the messy, manual labor with a touch of decorum suggests a man with a sense of personal pride or a routine he adheres to despite his rugged environment.
The scene is set around a sturdy carving table where a single,… fresh fish lies ready for cleaning.
The true focal point of the painting, however, is the fishmonger's gaze. He is looking away from the fish and the knife, his eyes fixed on something outside the frame. This averted glance introduces an air of mystery and depth. It powerfully suggests that either he is momentarily distracted or, more profoundly, it illustrates the sheer mastery of his profession.

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Nagui's passion for painting blossomed during his college years. While pursuing his medical degree, he concurrently enrolled in the independent fine art study program at the University of Alexandria Atelier. This dual pursuit of art and medicine would profoundly shape his artistic perspective.
His early work quickly gained recognition. In 1973, he held his inaugural solo exhibition at the University Physician's Club, followed by another in 1975 at the prestigious French Cultural Center in Alexandria.
Upon immigrating to the United States, Nagui embarked on a career in psychiatry, a profession he believes has significantly influenced his approach to painting.
Artistic Practice: Nagui maintains a prolific output, annually producing a substantial body of work that includes medium and large-size paintings, alongside numerous smaller pieces and drawings.
