About this artwork
The painting captures a woman poised on a balcony. A solitary figure framed against the rigid geometry of the surrounding apartment blocks. In her left hand, she cradles a coffee mug. Her other hand grips a weathered copy of Albert Camus' La Peste. The harbor is unnervingly still. This absence of life emphasizes the profound stillness of the lockdown era, transforming the urban landscape into a stage of expectant silence.
The symbolism within the… work speaks to the psychological weight of the pandemic. The book, La Peste, serves as a direct bridge between the historical concept of exile and the contemporary reality of quarantine. By placing her on a balcony, the artist highlights a liminal space: she is outside yet confined, connected to the world by sight but severed from it by distance. It is a portrait of endurance, where the act of reading becomes a form of resistance against the surrounding void.

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Nagui's passion for painting blossomed during his college years. While pursuing his medical degree, he concurrently enrolled in the independent fine art study program at the University of Alexandria Atelier. This dual pursuit of art and medicine would profoundly shape his artistic perspective.
His early work quickly gained recognition. In 1973, he held his inaugural solo exhibition at the University Physician's Club, followed by another in 1975 at the prestigious French Cultural Center in Alexandria.
Upon immigrating to the United States, Nagui embarked on a career in psychiatry, a profession he believes has significantly influenced his approach to painting.
Artistic Practice: Nagui maintains a prolific output, annually producing a substantial body of work that includes medium and large-size paintings, alongside numerous smaller pieces and drawings.
