About this artwork
Echoes of the Past grew from my ongoing exploration of circles as symbols of life, memory, and continuity. I am drawn to the circle because it holds no beginning and no end - it mirrors the way experiences move through us, return, and transform over time.
While working on this piece, I thought about how the past never fully disappears. It lives within us in layers, rhythms, and subtle repetitions. The circular forms reflect these inner cycles -… emotional, generational, and personal - while the textured surface suggests accumulation, erosion, and remembrance.
Gold appears as a quiet reminder of value and transformation: what endures, what is carried forward, even when partially hidden. This painting is an invitation to feel the echoes of lived moments and to sense how the past continues to shape the present through unseen, cyclical movement.
« My paintings are reflections of my inner self, my feelings, and my emotions, as well as my love for colors, structure, movements, and harmony. »
Nena Lang is an award-winning contemporary abstract artist based in Vienna, Austria. Born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, she works in a refined mixed-media abstract expressionist style, creating layered compositions that explore movement, memory and transformation. Her paintings are defined by rich textures, atmospheric color fields, and a balance between intuitive gesture and structural clarity.
With a background in theatre and cultural history, Lang approaches abstraction as both an emotional and architectural space. Before fully dedicating herself to painting, she worked in academic and cultural research, a foundation that continues to inform the symbolic depth of her work. She works with acrylics, pigments, mixed media and gold leaf, using palette knives and rulers to build tactile, layered surfaces. Circular forms and flowing structures recur throughout her work, evoking inner landscapes and quiet geometries.
