Inspired by Robert Musil’s novel The Man Without Qualities, in this work I explores identity as something fluid and unresolved.
By eliminating color, this painting relies on contrast, structure, and surface to convey meaning. Light and shadow replace narrative certainty, creating a quiet but intense presence. The monochrome palette reinforces restraint and clarity, allowing space for reflection rather than resolution.
The work does not seek to… define identity, but to hold it open, as a condition rather than a conclusion.

Nena Lang is an award-winning contemporary abstract artist based in Vienna, Austria. Born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, she works in a refined mixed-media abstract expressionist style, creating layered compositions that explore movement, memory and transformation. Her paintings are defined by rich textures, atmospheric color fields, and a balance between intuitive gesture and structural clarity.
With a background in theatre and cultural history, Lang approaches abstraction as both an emotional and architectural space. Before fully dedicating herself to painting, she worked in academic and cultural research, a foundation that continues to inform the symbolic depth of her work. She works with acrylics, pigments, mixed media and gold leaf, using palette knives and rulers to build tactile, layered surfaces. Circular forms and flowing structures recur throughout her work, evoking inner landscapes and quiet geometries.
