About this artwork
This piece is an Exhibition-specific print and is printed on Moab Metallic Pearl Paper (Resin coated, water resistant, acid free) in 2021. The image (originally photographed in 2017) was part of the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum Exhibition in Cologne "Resist! The Art of Resistance" and reimagines the history of the Mau Mau Rebellion against British colonialism in Kenya. While living there for almost six years I photographed the landscape, took portraits…
of eye witness and recreated scenes with protagonists. This image is about Mau Mau fighters; those who chose to surrender identified themselves by carrying green branches in front of their faces.

Nura Qureshi is a German-born artist who works predominantly with photography. Of Turkish origin, she grew up in a multicultural household raised by a Pakistani father and a German mother. The experience of navigating two distinct cultural value systems continues to shape Qureshi’s artistic practice. This tension fuels the central question at the heart of her work, as she explores themes of collective memory and identity.
