This series of chemigrams is inspired by the birch-lined road near my house, where slender trunks and shifting light spark an exploration of organic pattern and form. Using darkroom chemicals directly on photographic paper, each print becomes a unique trace of the process—no two alike, just as no two trees are the same.
Balancing the delicate textures of birch is the solitary oak tree right in front of my balcony: its enduring, gnarled presence… offers a grounding counterpoint. Together, these elements create an abstract dialogue between fragility and strength—where chemistry, observation, and memory merge into quietly layered images of nature’s resilience.
The work is printed on rare, now unavailable ORWO photographic paper from the former GDR, whose subtle surface qualities add depth and character to each piece.
Nura Qureshi is a German-born artist who works predominantly with photography. Of Turkish origin, she grew up in a multicultural household raised by a Pakistani father and a German mother. The experience of navigating two distinct cultural value systems continues to shape Qureshi’s artistic practice. This tension fuels the central question at the heart of her work, as she explores themes of collective memory and identity.
