The connection between my work on paper "Apart Together" and the music of the Jimmy Woods Sextet is both literal and profound — Apart Together is precisely the title of a track on the album Conflict (1963), that masterpiece of advanced hard bop recorded in Los Angeles.
The painting is a collage of rectangular planes of distinct colors; it is the device of Woods' sextet where each musician maintains a distinct sonic identity while participating in… a collective block.
A large portion of the page remains white, empty. In Woods' music, these are the silences, the breaths between phrases, the spaces that Andrew Hill creates in his voicings. White is not an absence—it is structuring, it holds the colors together like silence holds the notes together.

Originally from the tranquil scenery of Switzerland, Patrick Piccinelli set forth on an enriching academic journey that took him to the distinguished corridors of ECAL (University of Art and Design, Lausanne, Switzerland), a stronghold of artistic brilliance on the global frontier. The respected tradition of flawless typography for which Switzerland is famed, coupled with the deep-seated influences of Swiss graphic design, known for its austere, minimalistic, and refined aesthetics, significantly guided Piccinelli’s artistic path. His palette is firmly rooted in geometric minimalism, a stylistic reverberation reminiscent of the illustrious “Zürich movement.” This era of artistic zeal was pioneered by notable figures such as Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse, and Verena Loewenberg, luminaries who were the frontrunners of geometric or constructed artistry. His works have recently been acquired by collectors in the United States, Japan and Europe.
