About this artwork
This canvas employs only three colors: black, off-white, and an intense sunny yellow. This perfectly reflects the logic of the Third Plane trio: Ron Carter on double bass, Herbie Hancock on piano, and Tony Williams on drums. Three voices, nothing more. No frills. Each element occupies its space with quiet authority.
The blocks of color are clearly delineated, but the edges of the yellow… in the lower right reveal the painter's hand—the visible brushstroke that slightly overflows. The Penguin Guide to Jazz hails the album as "Carter's most impressive performance under his own name." This tension between formal rigor and spontaneous impulse is precisely what we see in the canvas: the geometry holds, but the painter's hand remains present.

« My research takes the direction of "parasitic" minimalism. I claim the expression of a rigorous geometric structure endangered by the soft and hazardous trace of the brush. »
