The series Going Bananas was photographed at the beginning of Covid-19 pandemic when the majority of countries in Asia went into lockdown.
At the time, I was printing my new work in Malaysia to exhibit at The Other Art fair in London 2020, when the event was forced to postpone and lockdowns around the world begun.
The studio I was staying in Malaysia had a big tropical garden with of Banana trees, luckily enough they began to flower which gave me… the the idea of the aptly named project “Going Bananas”.
Each print is layered with acetate during exposure which is scratched or cut using a scalpel and sandpaper. Once the print is made each print is split toned, left to dry and the toning process repeated. As I individually scratch and tone each print separately, each print differs from the next making them originals.
This print is no1 from an open edition.
*Please note. The above measurements is the outer frame size. Image size 11cm x 11cm.
Paul Gadd is a British photographer based in Seoul, deeply rooted in classical film photography and darkroom printing, with extensive experience in fashion, portraiture, and documentary work. His technique is hands-on and experimental—scratching and toning negatives, applying mixed-media during hand-printing, and finishing with processes like bleaching or encaustic, making each print a unique original. Through his evocative images, Paul channels his personal experiences and surroundings, conveying a rich tapestry of emotions—from melancholy and anger to humour and love—inviting viewers to deeply connect with his evolving visual narratives.
