About this artwork
The wooden frames stand secretly at the edge of the forest, a ladder made of sticks leans inconspicuously against a tree. The bold constructions are often hidden in the dense undergrowth, while imposing stands take up positions in the open field. It's about architecture - the very inconspicuous, hardly perceived architecture of the hunting hides.
Paul Mayer's photographs capture the aesthetic appeal of the mostly towering hunting lodges. They do… not show sober images, no classic architectural photographs, but rather an abstract, almost typified landscape photography. The concentrated and at the same time contemplative black and white images underline the anarchic quality of the buildings in their formal reduction and transport the viewer into an unexpected universe. Once the eye has picked up the trail of the raised hides, the stalking can begin.
