About this artwork
Mixed Media, Fragmented Silkscreen and painted printed papers on canvas. Using collage to construct color fields of motion and textures. Looking at the surface and structure of the painting I cut into it with an etching tool at the same time building the surface with collage. The idea of deconstructing and constructing a tactile surface that is vibrant and alive.

Paula Menchen is a British-born visual artist working in painting and printmaking, with a rich background from Otis Art Institute of Parsons and Parsons School of Design, plus advanced printmaking residencies. She fuses traditional Western techniques with Japanese Mokuhanga, using methods like sanding, burning, stenciling, and collage to create vibrant, tactile landscapes. Her compositions layer abstraction with nuanced textures, embodying both deconstruction and preservation. Through her multi-sensory processes, she conveys ethereal atmospheres, nostalgia, and the emotional memory of home—inviting viewers to connect visually and viscerally with ideas of belonging and transformation.
