About this artwork
Created from multiple sketches of faces while on my daily journey on the 380
to my art studio in East London. I sketched the faces I saw on the bus with me and drew them into the circles on canvas. The large transparent figure is a shadow of myself referring to the memory and traces of that time.
Paula Menchen is a British-born visual artist working in painting and printmaking, with a rich background from Otis Art Institute of Parsons and Parsons School of Design, plus advanced printmaking residencies. She fuses traditional Western techniques with Japanese Mokuhanga, using methods like sanding, burning, stenciling, and collage to create vibrant, tactile landscapes. Her compositions layer abstraction with nuanced textures, embodying both deconstruction and preservation. Through her multi-sensory processes, she conveys ethereal atmospheres, nostalgia, and the emotional memory of home—inviting viewers to connect visually and viscerally with ideas of belonging and transformation.
