About this artwork
Oil, encaustic and varnish on canvas. Jungle is a playful mixed media encaustic painting focusing on color and it´s ability to change. It´s imagery and forms are inspired by warm nights and breezes in the mediterranean, South of Spain, with parrots and birds flying in the warm summer skies. Building up the surface with a mix of encaustic paint, oil, spray paint and stencils, scraping and cutting away the layers with an etching tool and razor blade… unveiling the layers that came before and a fusion of color.
Paula Menchen is a British-born visual artist working in painting and printmaking, with a rich background from Otis Art Institute of Parsons and Parsons School of Design, plus advanced printmaking residencies. She fuses traditional Western techniques with Japanese Mokuhanga, using methods like sanding, burning, stenciling, and collage to create vibrant, tactile landscapes. Her compositions layer abstraction with nuanced textures, embodying both deconstruction and preservation. Through her multi-sensory processes, she conveys ethereal atmospheres, nostalgia, and the emotional memory of home—inviting viewers to connect visually and viscerally with ideas of belonging and transformation.
