About this artwork
Based on the ephemeral and the vastness of a calm blue. For me it is a place based on memory. This can be any beach in the world. Understanding a universal experience of landscape derived from our senses. “The beach is not always a place, sometimes its a feeling.
Peaceful, calm and gentle, blue is a soothing color often associated with the vastness of the sea and sky. It has the ability to instill a sense of peace and being grounded. From sky to… midnight, to radiant or a deep inky blue they all have the ability to construct the calm.

Paula Menchen is a British-born visual artist working in painting and printmaking, with a rich background from Otis Art Institute of Parsons and Parsons School of Design, plus advanced printmaking residencies. She fuses traditional Western techniques with Japanese Mokuhanga, using methods like sanding, burning, stenciling, and collage to create vibrant, tactile landscapes. Her compositions layer abstraction with nuanced textures, embodying both deconstruction and preservation. Through her multi-sensory processes, she conveys ethereal atmospheres, nostalgia, and the emotional memory of home—inviting viewers to connect visually and viscerally with ideas of belonging and transformation.
